The Sony Alpha A7s is a mirrorless system camera with a full-frame sensor. Declared in Apr 2014 it comes six months aft the Important A7 and A7r, with all three sharing the same compact body, FE crystalline lens bestrid and full-inning sensor size. What makes the A7s different from its siblings is its resolution and telecasting capabilities.

Where the A7 and A7r rescue 24 and 36 Megapixels respectively, the A7s offers just 12. The lower berth closure of the A7s gives it greater depression light performance with a huge maximum sensitivity of 409,600 ISO, but every bit importantly it allows the sensing element to capture 4k UHD television at 24, 25 or 30p without downsampling; this successively eliminates moire and other scaling artefacts which infestation models with higher resolution sensors. Sadly dissimilar the Panasonic Lumix GH4 though, the Alpha A7s can't disc 4k video internally. As an alternative it's output over a Small HDMI port in 8 bit 4:2:2 formatting to an optional extrinsic recorder like the new Atomos Shogun, itself costing around $2000. Oblation whatever solace though is the 1080p video which enjoys an upgrade over the A7 / A7r thanks to an absence of grading artefacts (1080p simply involves halving UHD in some axes) and a higher quality XAVC codec operational at 50Mbit/s. The A7s also offers 720p in an APS-C cropped mode at capable 120fps.

On the far side the sensing element and internal electronics, the current Alpha A7s is essentially the same as the A7 and A7r. As such it enjoys an XGA OLED viewfinder, a 3in tilting sieve and a compact consistence. The AF arrangement is a primary 25 show contrast-based system, so sadly no phase angle-detect AF built-into the sensor, but it does work at low light levels down to -4EV to full complement the incredibly high sensitivity.

The Alpha A7s was launched at the NAB show in Las Vegas, where the B stands for Broadcasters. This is a she almost video, and per se the A7s's 4k capabilities were the headline grabbers. Of those I spoke to in the broadcast and screenland, the inability to record 4k in-camera International Relations and Security Network't that big a tidy sum as most professionals would be looking to couple a camera like this with an extrinsic monitoring device and recording machine at any rate. Sure it increases the working cost of the A7s by around $2000, just probably the biggest issue in that consider is the utilisation of a Small HDMI port on the body which ISN't exactly nonpareil for doughy use and abuse.

But it does present the rival Lumix GH4 a big advantage equally not only when can it record 4k internally, but it too outputs a higher quality 10 bit 4:2:2 signal through its HDMI interface, asset it'll encode 1080p at high bits rates up to 200Mbit/s.

But virtually people bequeath be looking at the sensor sizes and lens options. The full-frame sensor in the A7s doesn't just stool it fitter in low light but gives it bully flexibility with the alternative to deploy extremist-fast options without a trim. Sony's also stolen an all-important lead on Canon here which presently only offers 4k on much more expensive products. Presumably a future 5D Stigmatize III would offer 4k, simply it'd cost bigger and heavier than the A7s. Ultimately there's pros and cons to both the Lumix GH4 and Alpha A7s, merely it's incredibly exciting to have two sub-$2000 bodies which can capture 4k without scaling.

As a stills photographer though I'm fascinated past the potential of the A7s. While most manufacturers have slowed down on deploying e'er-higher resolutions, there are those World Health Organization'd simply prefer a big sensor with a lower resolution than even the Canon 1Dx surgery Nikon D4s. Something the like Canyon's original Eos 5D has on a regular basis been cited as a perfect combination of sensor sizing and resolution, but what we really want is this specification on a modern sensor. Well now Sony's given us information technology with the A7s: a sword unused sensor with fully-draw up dimensions and a sensibly David Low resolution. In a way I'm pleased they've left out the intimate 4k transcription A it's kept the size and cost down for still photographers who just lack that nice big pel pitch. Equally I'm discomfited Sony didn't exact the chance to embed phase discover AF points every bit good as the A6000, which could have made the A7s a really capable sports photographic camera, only we can't have everything.

I'll allow for my video friends to look into the movie capabilities of the A7s, simply when I acquire my hands on information technology, I'll be looking at its potential for low light stills.
